A few weeks ago the unthinkable happened. My beloved Keurig K-Cup single serve coffee maker stopped working. Frantic, I called Keurig to get a replacement machine since the one I had was still under warranty. Much to my dismay I was told it would take up to two weeks to get it. This was the worst news I could have gotten from the coffee giant that has become a must in my household. What were my husband and I going to do for two weeks without coffee? We decided that we would try instant coffee to get us through this tough time. My husband went to the store and came home with Folgers Instant Coffee bags. All I have to say is gross!!! This was the worst coffee I had ever tasted. Was there any instant coffee out there that wouldn’t taste like dishwater? Feeling defeated and in desperate need for a coffee fix I ran back to the store. As I walked down the coffee isle a package jumped out at me like a mirage in the desert. Starbucks actually had an instant coffee. I grabbed about 6 different flavors, paid and ran home to try out my new find.
Opening the outer chipboard packaging was easy and once opened I noticed it was also a great dispenser for the cute little packets of instant coffee inside. The form and fill metalized barrier packets were easy to open and fit beautifully in my purse. I dumped the contents of the packet in my coffee mug and much to my amazement it was good. Starbucks had found a way to offer a truly great cup of coffee that you can prepare by just adding water. Other instant coffees taste flat and lifeless. Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew is different – it’s full-bodied and flavorful, just like their Starbucks® coffee we all know and love.
Not only is the coffee awesome so is the comprehensive brand strategy, product identity and package design. The packaging evokes the warm, regional colors of Colombia and Italy, and the “unboxing” experience is further enriched by a number of discovered elements – a convenient-coffee manifesto, sipping tips, even a personal message from Howard Schultz. It’s taken 17 years to create a ready-brew product worthy of the name, but Starbucks VIA has already begun to erase the watered-down legacy of “instant coffee,” and I am excited to have found it.
Never be without great coffee again. Leveraging itself with a strong history of great coffee Starbucks has inventively created a new ready-brew product. Tasked to differentiate Starbucks VIA from the “instant coffee” category, they deliver a solid brand strategy, product identity and package design. Since this coffee promises to be rich in flavor with a bold Italian and medium Colombian roast, their packaging colors and imagery reflect the same evocative flavor of the warm, regional colors of Italy and Colombia.
