Tide to change Pods lid over child safety concerns
Monday, July 30th, 2012
Just months ago, Tide launched their new breakthrough laundry detergent – Tide Pods. The pods are laundry detergent packaged in a dissolvable shell. The pods have two swirls of colorful liquid on one side and then powder detergent on the other. However, the colorful swirls are not only attracting consumers to purchase the Tide Pods. There has been an issue with children eating the Tide Pods laundry detergent. Nearly 250 reported cases have been issued of children swallowing Pods because they thought they were small cubes of candy. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) issued a warning last week that people should keep highly concentrated, single-dose packs of detergent high up and out of the reach of children.
According to the AAPCC, some young children who swallowed the small packets required hospitalization, while others got the detergent in their eyes. Procter & Gamble Co. said it will make Tide Pods more difficult to open. A double latch will be put on the lid of Tide Pods tubs, said P&G spokesman Paul Fox
