Making Sense of Tape Adhesives

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Every day I get dozens of calls from customers asking what tape is best for their needs.  Many of them have no idea that tapes have different adhesives and what each one of them do.  Here is a brief explanation of each adhesive to help you with your next tape order:

Polypro Tape with Hot Melt Adhesive

Hot Melt Adhesive Tapes

Hot Melt adhesive tapes offer the widest range of application flexibility available. They offer excellent performance whether applied by hand or by a carton sealer. Their superior adhesion properties, holding force, and tensile strength ensure consistent, reliable seals. Noted for a quiet release and easy unwind, Hot Melt carton sealing tapes are well suited for automatic carton sealers. Our clear packing tape, Intertape carton tape, premiuim packaging tape and industrial box sealing tape all have a Hot Melt Adhesive.

Acrylic Adhesive Tapes

Acrylic adhesive tapes have high temperature resistance, high-grade UV resistance and great permanent bonding strength. They are best suited for applications in temperatures less that 40°F and greater than 120°F. Providing excellent clarity, acrylic tapes age well over extended periods in sunlight and fluorescent lighting. The acrylic adhesive in acrylic carton sealing tapes feature improved quick-stick performance, higher shear strength, reduced haze and improved clarity. We have a variety of packing tape with an acrylic adhesive.

Natural Rubber Adhesive Tapes

Natural rubber adhesive tapes are the problem solving tapes of the industry. Natural rubber tapes are unique among adhesive backed tapes because of their aggressive adhesion properties, quickly penetration, and grip on corrugated (and other surfaces) saving “rub down” time. They are ideal for cartons with recycled paper content, heavy ink coverage, rough or ultra-smooth surfaces and other problem cartons. Natural rubber carton sealing tapes have fast positive bonding and high shear adhesion. They are moisture resistant and are also ideal for temperature extremes (hot or cold), being moisture resistant and tolerating humid and damp conditions. Exhibiting firm unwind capabilities, these tapes are excellent for hand held tape dispensers and carton sealers.

How to Save Money…without Really Trying

Monday, January 24th, 2011
Annual income aside, there’s not a person among us who wouldn’t welcome the idea of having more money in their savings account. This is the money we use on everything from yearly vacations to family presents. Come holiday time, wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra thousand or so dollars at your disposal? Here are a few ideas that can help to make that possible. The best part is you’ll hardly feel it!
Bring Your Lunch to Work - The average person spends $6 when they buy their lunch yet only $2 when they pack it themselves. That’s a potential savings of $20 a week or $1,040 dollars a year.  Add a Non Woven bag to package your lunch in you’re not only saving money you are saving the planet.

Durable over Disposable - Using products like Handi-Wipes (semi-disposable rags) as opposed to paper towels, and a rechargeable razor rather than the disposable kind, can save you up to $200 per year.

Hold an Annual Yard Sale - You should have no problem making at least a hundred bucks. Besides, you’ll get rid of all that household clutter in the process. Whatever you don’t sell can be donated to charity and used as a tax write-off.

Ask for Discounts - From buying airline tickets to paying a medical bill, always ask if there’s a discount to be had. The worst that can happen is you’ll be told no.

Get a Library Card - As opposed to buying a book for $20 or renting a DVD for $4, get it for free. If you average 3 movie rentals a month, you’ll save yourself over $140 a year.

Watch Those Utilities - Changing over to energy saving light bulbs and low flow showerheads is a great start. Also, most utility companies offer a home audit you can complete online. If not, go to http://hes.lbl.gov for a virtual inspection of your home. You may be surprised to learn how much energy (and money) you could be saving.
The good news is suggestions like these are merely a start. Only you know where your household may be wasting money. Find inefficient habits and figure out a solution. Remember, every little bit counts. The final step is when you save money on something, put the savings into an earmarked account. Then leave it alone until it’s the appropriate time to use it.

Greenwashing is the new whitewashing:

Monday, January 17th, 2011

The term whitewash is to gloss over or cover up vices, crimes or scandals or to exonerate through biased presentation of data. It is especially used in the context of corporations, governments or other organizations.   Greenwashing is the process of deceiving your clients into believing your product is eco-friendly through the use of marketing and public relations tactics. Greenwashing is running rampant as companies see the potential for profit in the “going green” movement.

In “green” branding, we must focus on the most crucial thing to NOT do:  and that is greenwashing.            Companies who “greenwash”  their products often overemphasize the eco-friendly  qualities of their products by highlighting them in exaggerating ways. This might mean changing the color of their packaging to the color green, or claiming that their product is eco-friendly when less than 10% of the materials used to make it are post-consumer recycled or biodegradable.

The bottom line with greenwashing is that consumers are starting to catch on to the fact that companies take advantage of eco-friendliness in some scenarios. You might be able to get away with this practice for a short period of time, but in the long term you are going to get burned. People appreciate honesty, and when a company lies to their customers it is very difficult to recover from that. So take the advice here - avoid greenwashing at all costs and develop your “green branding  the honest way.
